LA/Long Beach port security talks extended to Wednesday 5 p.m. PT

The Pacific Maritime Association and ILWU Local 26 extended talks past the Nov 1 deadline to 5 p.m. PT Wednesday, Nov 4, with federal mediators assisting. Local 26 represents about 250 watchmen, a relatively small share of port workers. They work at terminals that handle about 85% of Long Beach cargo and 33% of Los Angeles cargo. The employer group warned that other ILWU workers are unlikely to cross picket lines, which could halt affected terminals. The contract expired in July 2025.

Western Alaska coast hit by repeated storms, including ex-Typhoon Champi

Last week, the remnants of Typhoon Champi tracked toward Bristol Bay, bringing high surf and 2-4 feet of water above normal high tide in places such as Hooper Bay. Heavy rain was forecast for Nome. NWS said this was the third notable storm in about a week, which raises beach erosion concerns. Forecasters expected another, possibly stronger, Bering Sea low early this week.
