Learjet crash near Greenacres, Florida, kills all 9 aboard; 600 residents displaced

A Learjet 60 bound from Austin, Texas, to North Eleuthera in the Bahamas crashed onto Military Trail near Greenacres in Palm Beach County at about 12:50 p.m. Sunday. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said all 9 people aboard died; Gov. Ron DeSantis said there were no immediate reports of anyone hurt on the ground. AP reported the crew had reported icing and turbulence; the jet then went into a steep dive and the crew declared an emergency. No cause has been determined. County officials are relocating about 600 people from a nearby mobile home community, Military Trail is closed between 10th Avenue North and Purdy Lane until further notice, some residents lost power, and John I. Leonard High School is closed Monday. The NTSB leads the investigation with the FAA. Reported distances from Mar-a-Lago vary: USA Today said less than 10 miles and Fox News about 9 miles. As of Monday afternoon, county officials said Military Trail stays closed until further notice, a county commissioner warned of an extended closure because of a large crater in the road, and evacuees were at the Greenacres Community Center. At a briefing Monday, NTSB Member Tom Chapman said there is some evidence the jet was breaking up before impact, which investigators are still working to confirm; the NTSB, leading the investigation with the FAA, has not determined what caused the rapid descent or the crash. Investigators mapped a debris field about half a mile across, AVweb reported.

Election Day storms in the Mid-South bring needed rain, low severe threat

NWS Memphis expects showers and storms to arrive late Tuesday afternoon west of the Mississippi River and spread east Tuesday night, with generally 1 to 2 inches of rain; it says weak instability should limit severe storms. Action News 5 expects a mostly dry morning, spotty showers after noon and most of the rain from around poll closing to just after midnight; it says a damaging gust cannot be ruled out in the western Mid-South. The rain falls on an area where the Oct. 27 Drought Monitor shows extreme to exceptional drought (D3-D4, the top two steps of the 5-step scale) across central and western Tennessee and northern Mississippi.
