The Iran war is still the world story that reaches American households most directly. US officials said US forces carried out limited strikes on Qeshm Island late Monday night into early Tuesday, Nov 2-3, after Revolutionary Guard fire at a US aircraft; Trump called it a minor attack. Iran's deputy foreign minister said Iran retains the right to self-defense, and the Guard said it downed a US drone (IRNA, Guard claim, not independently confirmed). Qatari mediators expect feedback from both sides on a new proposal within about 36 hours, per Reuters via CBS. Shipping attacks continued Nov 3: UKMTO confirmed a dhow hit off Oman that killed at least one crew member and a tanker struck by two projectiles. Brent settled at $103.60 Tuesday (CNBC) after closing Monday at $104.77 (NBC). Russia launched 310 drones at Ukraine overnight into Nov 4, Congo's Ebola deaths are 5,130 (CDC), and the US flight attestation rule for Ebola took effect at 11:59 pm Eastern Nov 3.

Drops to Yellow if Qatari mediators get a yes from both sides and tankers move through Hormuz in volumeGoes Red if Iran retaliates for the Qeshm strike, or US or Israeli strikes widen after the Nov 3 midterms

US limited strikes on Qeshm Island draw an Iranian self-defense warning

US officials told CNN, CBS and the Wall Street Journal that US forces struck Qeshm Island late Monday night or early Tuesday in what they called a defensive action; NBC and CNN reported officials said it was not a resumption of major combat. Trump called it a minor attack on an anti-aircraft site, per Stripes. Iran's IRNA said the Revolutionary Guard shot down a US drone near the island; that is Iran's claim. Deputy Foreign Minister Gharibabadi said Iran reserves the right to self-defense, and Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf said any US miscalculation would bring an unpredictable response (Al Jazeera). Trump told Axios he is in no rush to resume strikes and told NBC no when asked about striking after the midterms. Why it matters to Americans: it tests whether the talks, the main route to lower fuel prices, hold.

Reports differ on progress: Al Jazeera said talks appeared to stall Monday while a draft circulated. Qatari mediators travelled to Tehran Monday night to meet Foreign Minister Araghchi.
