OrangeThreat levelUnchanged from yesterday

The Iran war still sets the level: the Revolutionary Guard claims tankers burned in Hormuz and Khamenei says the US midterm results change nothing, while Trump says he has no immediate plans to strike and Qatar's talks continue. Oil fell about 8% Wednesday (Brent $94.62), yet AAA's national averages remain $4.10 for regular gasoline and $6.26 for diesel. No major US grid, cyber or communications disruption is underway, and flooding in the Four Corners, north Georgia and east-central Florida is regional.

Drops to Yellow if a deal reopens Hormuz, tanker traffic resumes and diesel keeps fallingGoes Red if Iran retaliates, ship attacks widen, talks collapse, or the LA/Long Beach port watchmen strike begins

Iran says tankers burned in Hormuz; Khamenei says US midterm results change nothing; US strike plans still reported

Iran's Revolutionary Guard said two tankers and a tugboat caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz and that it captured two US drones; both are unverified claims. Khamenei said US hostility will persist after the midterms. Trump said the US is ready to act but may not need to if talks continue (per Fox News and the Financial Times via Al Jazeera). US media citing officials reported Central Command (CENTCOM) strike plans that could begin as early as Wednesday (Al Jazeera, Nov 4); these are plans, not a decision. Trump confirmed a US strike on an Iranian anti-aircraft site early Nov 3; we found no US strikes since.

Oil falls about 8% in a day after the midterms; US fuel prices still high

WTI settled at $88.12 and Brent at $94.62 Wednesday; analysts quoted by CNBC say the results raise the chance of a US-Iran deal, others still see escalation risk. AAA national regular is $4.10, diesel $6.26. Hormuz is still restricted, so the move reflects expectations, not a reopening.

Pentagon treats freezer failures at US base commissaries as a suspected hack

Reuters reported the Pentagon is treating freezer failures at at least six US base commissaries as a suspected cyberattack; the Pentagon says a Cyber Command unit is working with law-enforcement partners, including Army CID's Cyber Field Office (Reuters via ThePrint) Anonymous officials told Defense One and Nextgov they suspect Iran; no one has said so on the record. Similar freezer-controller attacks hit stores in Europe; Defense One reports French authorities are working with US officials, and no public finding links the two. No civilian US store attack has been reported.

Greenacres, Fla., Learjet 60 crash: NTSB says left elevator found up to 3.8 miles away

A Learjet 60 bound from Austin to North Eleuthera, Bahamas, crashed along Military Trail in Greenacres around 12:50 p.m. Nov. 1, killing all 9 aboard. NTSB board member Tom Chapman said investigators recovered most of the left elevator in pieces 1.3 to 3.8 miles from the site, which may indicate the aircraft began to separate in flight; outlets differ on how firmly that is established. The crew reported light ice and moderate turbulence before an overspeed condition and rapid descent. The NTSB has not named a cause; NBC reported a preliminary report is expected in about a month. About 600 residents were reported displaced as of the Nov. 2 briefing.

Russian strike on an aid site in Zaporizhzhia region: Ukraine says 40 dead, dozens missing, days before US-brokered talks

Ukrainian officials said a Russian bombing on Nov. 2 of a school building used to hand out aid in Komyshuvakha, Zaporizhzhia region, followed by a strike on an underground shelter, had killed 40 people as of Nov. 4, up from 37; Zelenskyy said more than 30 people may still be under the rubble. Counts changed during the week (ABC reported 29, the Washington Post 31). The dead include four police officers and two rescue workers, Al Jazeera reported. Al Jazeera reported no Russian response in its article. US envoy Steve Witkoff said Ukrainian and Russian delegations will meet in Abu Dhabi on Nov. 10-11, which Al Jazeera ties to a ceasefire that Putin agreed to discuss after meeting Witkoff on Oct. 21. The UN human rights mission in Ukraine said the bombing likely violated international law. This is not in the draft's Ukraine section, which covers the Nov. 4 drone raid but not this strike.

Comms chatter What people are saying vs. what we found

The FBI raided a Houston warehouse the night before Election Day and found more than 20,000 fraudulent ballots cast for Democrats.
Circulating on Facebook and X posts on Nov 3; per Yahoo/KHOU the post was shared nearly 10,000 times and viewed more than 400,000 times.
What we foundThe FBI's national office said the posts were false and that no election-related operation occurred (PolitiFact; the FBI gave the same statement to KHOU, per Yahoo). PolitiFact rated it Pants on Fire and found no news or records of a raid on Nov 2 or early Nov 3. It traced the photos to other events: a January FBI search of the Fulton County, Ga., election center, a Houston storage-facility listing, and ballots collected from a San Francisco drop box in October. Snopes also rated it false.
Sen. Chris Murphy's stroke came days after he warned about Iran plans, and posts suggest a directed-energy or 'frequency' weapon was used on him.
Circulating on X and Facebook posts, plus blogs and Substack pieces, since Nov 1-2.
What we foundThe hospitalization is real. Murphy's chief of staff said he developed arm numbness at his son's hockey game, was taken to a local hospital and moved to Johns Hopkins; his team said he was awake and alert and expected to make a full recovery (AP via Spectrum News). CNBC reported Nov 3 that he remained hospitalized and his spokesperson said he was continuing to improve. IBTimes UK reported that some online users questioned the timing, given his Oct 29 remarks on Iran, and noted there is no public evidence linking the stroke to those remarks. The 'frequency weapon' version is circulating on social posts; none of our links carries evidence for it. We found no official, doctor or fact-checker linking the stroke to a weapon or to his Iran remarks. Lead Stories separately found that a viral hospital image said to be Murphy was a stroke patient pictured in a Nov 2025 BBC article in England, posted by an account whose bio says parody. Past US intelligence reviews of 'Havana syndrome' did not find an adversary's energy weapon (Washington Post, 2023).
Ballot scanner failures in Westchester County, N.Y., were Democrats cheating or suppressing Republican votes.
Circulating on Social media posts on Election Day, Nov 3, per AP.
What we foundAP's fact check found no credible evidence for it and said the breakdown appears to be a technical problem. Officials said scanners rejected paper ballots because of a program update made after the equipment was tested; the state Board of Elections attributed it to not deploying updated programming (Gothamist, ABC7). Unscanned ballots went into emergency bags, and a judge approved a bipartisan plan for counting them, per the same reports. Rep. Mike Lawler, whose seat was at stake, told Fox News there were no 'shenanigans' (AP), and CBS New York reported he conceded to Cait Conley. The county said it would investigate what went wrong; no findings were found.
The US may be days from a nuclear strike on Iran's Pickaxe Mountain site.
Circulating on Tucker Carlson's X thread Nov 1-2, then reposts and commentary; overlaps with 'nuclear war in two weeks' doom posts.
What we foundUpdate to the Nov 3 item. Carlson cited an unnamed 'informed observer' and no evidence, per The War Zone and Anadolu Agency. A White House official told TWZ on Nov 2 that the president has a wide range of options on Iran; per Anadolu, an official said the administration does not comment on sensitive military plans. Neither confirmed nor denied a nuclear plan. TWZ reported that Trump answered 'no' earlier Nov 2 when asked whether he was considering an attack after the election. Arms-control experts quoted by TWZ called a nuclear strike unlikely or highly unlikely. Anadolu Agency reported Carlson said Trump could decide by Nov 7; we found no evidence for it and no new official statement dated Nov 4-5.
A poll worker in Rogers, Minn., wore a shirt mocking the Charlie Kirk assassination and NBC planned to call both chambers for Democrats before votes were counted.
Circulating on Social media posts on Election Day, Nov 3, per AP.
What we foundAP rated both claims false. On the shirt, the city said it was Halloween attire with no political message, and the worker was not sent home to change as posts claimed. On NBC, AP reported NBC's own X post said an early projection was possible but more likely to take time. Another AP fact check (Nov 4) reported that false rigging claims were limited after the midterms.
Canada lit Niagara Falls blue to celebrate Democrats' midterm wins.
Circulating on Social posts after the Nov 3 vote.
What we foundSnopes rated it false (Nov 4). It reported the Niagara Falls Illumination Board said the lighting was teal for an Alzheimer's Awareness Month event, not a political message.

Chatter volume: moderate - Post-election claims (a Houston 'raid', Westchester scanners) are the biggest, mostly debunked within a day; no strong doomsday-date or grid-down wave found beyond Nov 4's items.

Power grid & FORTRESS America

watch

No US grid attack, large outage or new DOE emergency order found for Nov 4-5.

No US grid attack, large outage or new DOE emergency order found for Nov 4-5. DOE's 2026 Federal Power Act 202(c) emergency-order list (read Nov 5) still shows Order 202-26-50, issued Oct 12 to PJM for Oct 13-16, as the newest; the only new DOE item is a Nov 4 press release on Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve contracts, which is not a grid order. Orders keeping older plants available remain in force: Craig Unit 1 in Colorado (Sep 27 to Dec 25), Culley 2 and Schahfer 17-18 in Indiana (to Dec 18). Stanton Unit 1 in Florida: DOE Order 202-26-42 runs Sep 2 to Nov 30 (Orlando Utilities Commission page); environmental groups have challenged the earlier order in the D.C. Circuit (Utility Dive and DOE filing summaries); whether it is renewed after Nov 30 is not known. FORTRESS America: no November developments found; as of the Oct 7 DefenseScoop report, the Pentagon directed a program office for the effort to let major bases run without the civilian grid. EO 14421 (Aug 26, 2026): no new DOE rule found; the Dec 24 date was not confirmed in anything read. Abroad: Ukraine's Energy Ministry said nuclear plants cut output after Russian strikes on substations (Nov 4), not a US item. Could not check: NERC/FERC pages, GWU Foggy Bottom outage follow-up (Nov 2 item dropped as resolved; no new reports).

Global conflict

Iran: Al Jazeera (live blog, Nov 5) reported Iran's Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) said two oil tankers and a tugboat caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz after using an 'unauthorised route', and that it captured two US drones intact; both are IRGC claims, not independently confirmed in what we found.

Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said in a written statement (Al Jazeera/AFP, Nov 4) that anyone expecting US policy to shift after the midterms is 'seriously mistaken' and warned a renewed US attack would draw a much wider response. Iran's chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Americans had rejected war; an IRGC commander's adviser said Iran would hit targets beyond US bases if Gulf states let Washington attack from their territory, naming the UAE and Bahrain (Al Jazeera). Al Jazeera, citing Fox News and the Financial Times, reported Trump said the US is ready to act but there 'may be no reason' if talks hold, and that advisers differ on a 'heavy hit'. As of Nov 4, US media citing officials reported Central Command (CENTCOM) strike plans that could begin as early as Wednesday (Al Jazeera, Nov 4); we found no report of new US strikes since the Nov 3-4 strike on an Iranian anti-aircraft site. Ukraine: Zelenskyy said overnight Russian attacks (Nov 3-4) damaged power plants and substations in nine regions; Kyiv had hours-long power and water outages. Russia's Defence Ministry said it downed 709 Ukrainian drones, and local authorities said Ukrainian drone strikes killed three in Belgorod region (Al Jazeera, Nov 4). Kremlin spokesman Peskov called the change in Congress 'an internal matter' and said Moscow hopes Trump continues peace efforts. As of Nov 4, Al Jazeera had reported US-Russia-Ukraine officials were due to meet in Abu Dhabi next week; not re-confirmed. Gaza and Lebanon: As of Nov 2, ABC (Reuters) reported Israeli strikes killed eight in Gaza, medics said; nothing newer verified. Taiwan: as of Nov 2, Taipei Times reported Taiwan's coast guard accused China of harassing shipping during a patrol east of Taiwan (see World). North Korea: not re-checked this run.

Oil fell sharply Wednesday after Tuesday's US midterm results.

Oil fell sharply Wednesday after Tuesday's US midterm results. CNBC reported WTI settled at $88.12 (down 8.3%) and Brent at $94.62 (down 8.7%); Bloomberg via Rigzone gave the same WTI figure. CNBC said analysts, including Andy Lipow of Lipow Oil Associates, read the results as raising the chance of a US-Iran deal, and that oil futures are down more than 14% this week as US and Iranian officials signaled openness to talks. Analysts differ: CIBC's Rebecca Babin said the sell-off could be overdone, and Rapidan Energy's Bob McNally said the odds still favor military escalation. Trump told the Financial Times he has no immediate plans to strike Iran (as reported by CNBC). AAA's national average for Nov 5: regular $4.10 (yesterday $4.12, week ago $4.23, month ago $4.37, year ago $3.08); diesel $6.26 (yesterday $6.27, week ago $6.33, month ago $6.32, year ago $3.70). Pump prices lag crude, so further easing is possible if crude holds, but nothing guarantees it. OPEC+ (the oil-producer group) kept output unchanged for December at its Nov 1 meeting, per OPEC's release listing; the next meeting is Nov 29. The official EIA weekly inventory report was released Nov 4, but its figures could not be retrieved; as of the Nov 3 report, API (an industry group, not EIA) had estimated a 5.3 million barrel crude draw for the week ending Oct 30, and the latest EIA distillate stock found is about 102.8 million barrels for the week of Oct 23 (carried).

Cyber attacks

elevated

Refrigeration attacks (open thread, re-checked Nov 5): the Pentagon is treating late-August freezer failures at at least six US military commissaries as a suspected cyberattack, with the Defense Criminal Investigative Service leading a joint probe and a Cyber Command unit coordinating with law enforcement (Reuters via ThePrint, Oct 29).

No attack on a US civilian store was found. Iran attribution remains unconfirmed on the record: two anonymous officials told Nextgov a US suspicion exists, and an Nov 4 aggregator headline of 'up to 14 bases' is not supported by the wire reporting read. Europe: French authorities' counts differ by source (hundreds of stores; one report cites about 700 supermarkets per the French finance minister) and a second wave reached several countries in early November (NPR, Al Jazeera). Water thread: CISA and FBI warned July 30 of a 'significant escalation' in attacks on water-utility controllers (Cybersecurity Dive); no newer water-sector item found for Nov 1-5, and no link to the freezer attacks is established in sources read. Elections: no confirmed cyberattack on voting systems as of the Nov 3 reports (Nextgov, Denver Gazette, WTOC); one weakly sourced Nov 5 post claims suspicious activity across election offices, which could not be verified and is not rated. CISA's advisories page blocked fetching (403) on Nov 5; the newest advisory found by search is the Oct 20 SafePay ransomware advisory (AA26-293A). Hospitals: the most recent found is UNM Health in Albuquerque on Oct 26: ambulances briefly diverted, clinics cancelled appointments, systems restored in phases; a ransomware group's data-theft claim is unconfirmed by UNM. No new hospital attack found for Nov 3-5. Could not check: CISA page directly, KEV catalog, FBI IC3.

East-central Florida flooding (Brevard, St. Lucie, Martin, Palm Beach): 2 dead, hundreds rescued, state of emergency for 14 counties as of Nov. 4 (ABC News, Insurance Journal); St. Johns River forecast to reach major flood stage late this week per NWS Melbourne text carried by an aggregator. Thu Nov 5. North Georgia flash flooding: the National Weather Service (NWS) Peachtree City office had Flash Flood Warnings in effect overnight for Fannin, Gilmer, Murray and Union counties in Georgia (issued 2:34 AM EST Nov 5 per the NWS alerts feed), and Cherokee County NC and Polk County TN (2:19 AM). WSB-TV (2:56 AM EST) reported the NWS raised the Fannin/Gilmer warning to a 'Considerable' threat level, with rain totals near 4 inches and up to 6 more possible; Fannin County Emergency Management estimated about 10 water rescues, five storm-related fires put out, and one man swept away in his car (his status was not reported). A shelter opened at the Fannin County Recreation Center in Blue Ridge and the county emergency operations center was activated. Local3 reported a flash flood emergency for parts of Fannin and Gilmer counties Wednesday night; Atlanta News First reported mudslides and possible water rescues around 10:45 PM. Other active Flood Warnings (NWS feed): Florida (Lake, Volusia, Seminole, Brevard, Hillsborough, DeSoto, Hardee), Arizona (Maricopa, Coconino, Navajo), Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska (Merrick), Louisiana (Calcasieu), Colorado/Utah (Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Montezuma, San Juan UT). High Wind Warnings in southeast Alaska (Ketchikan area, Prince of Wales Island). Outlook: the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) rates severe-storm risk 1 to 5 (1 Marginal to 5 High); its 6 AM UTC Nov 5 outlook has no severe-thunderstorm areas ('severe storms are unlikely today and tonight'). The Weather Prediction Center (WPC, 2:58 AM EST) says a cold front brings showers and thunderstorms to the Eastern Seaboard today, with rain increasing Friday over the Northeast and New England and an isolated to scattered flash-flood threat; heavy rain is possible along the western Gulf Coast into the weekend; a series of Pacific systems brings soaking rain to the Northwest from Friday, which WPC calls largely beneficial given drought; cooler than average air moves into the Plains and Midwest while the East stays unseasonably mild for a day or two. Tropics: National Hurricane Center (NHC), 1 AM EST Nov 5: a non-tropical low a few hundred miles south of Bermuda could gradually pick up subtropical traits through the weekend, 30% chance of formation in 48 hours and 50% in 7 days (up from 20% and 40% yesterday); conditions turn unfavorable early next week. Space weather (NOAA SWPC, 08:45 UTC): G (geomagnetic storm), R (radio blackout) and S (radiation storm) scales are 0 now. SWPC issued a Watch (19:04 UTC Nov 4) for G1 (minor, scale 1 of 5) storms on Nov 6 and 7, driven by a stream of fast solar wind from a coronal hole; its 3-day forecast shows G1 possible late Nov 6 and early Nov 7. Radio blackout chance: R1-R2 30-35%, R3 or greater 10% daily. The 2 MeV electron flux alert (energetic particles that can affect satellites) continued Nov 4 (peak 4,077 on Nov 3). A K-index 4 warning ran Nov 4 to 15:00 UTC. No G3 or higher and no grid warning.

Searches on Nov 5 found no reports of post-election protests, new emergency declarations or new National Guard activations tied to the Nov 3 midterms; this is an absence in search results, not a confirmed quiet. As of Nov 3, USA TODAY reported scattered Election Day problems and no confirmed widespread interference, including ballot scanner failures in Westchester County, N.Y., flooding at some polling sites, and bomb threats that briefly paused voting in Toledo, Ohio, and at a Michigan site. As of Nov 3, The Hill and KUOW reported Guard roles were cybersecurity support and, in some Washington counties, unarmed members near drop boxes. D.C. Guard deployment: appeals arguments were Oct 14 (NBC Washington/AP, carried forward); no ruling found. 9th Circuit ruled the Los Angeles deployment unlawful (The Hill, earlier). Alaska Senate certification suit was dismissed Nov 1 and the Justice Department said it would appeal (AP via Spectrum, as of Nov 3).

US stocks rose sharply Wednesday (Nov 4), the day after the midterms. Investing.com reported the Dow closed at 53,357.19 (up about 3%), the S&P 500 at 7,689.58 (up 1.6%) and the Nasdaq composite at 25,736.51 (up 1.4%); other pages differ slightly (S&P 7,688.62). Reasons given: the midterm results removed an uncertainty, and oil fell. Moves were uneven: AI and data-center names, chipmakers (the Philadelphia semiconductor index fell 3.1%) and defense stocks fell, while clean-energy stocks rose. The Fed held its target range at 3.75% to 4% on Oct 28 on a 10-2 vote; next meeting Dec 8-9 (carried from Nov 3). The October jobs report is due Friday Nov 6 (carried; release date not re-checked). LA/Long Beach watchmen strike: the outcome is unknown. The extended contract ran to 5 p.m. Pacific Wednesday Nov 4 (7 p.m. Central). That deadline has passed, but no coverage dated after it was found: no report of a deal, a strike, or another extension. About 250 ILWU Local 26 watchmen (gate and terminal security) are involved; talks have federal mediator help. The Pacific Maritime Association (PMA, the employer group) says their terminals handle roughly 85% of Long Beach and 33% of Los Angeles cargo and that other ILWU workers are not expected to cross picket lines; the union says employers have not made meaningful progress. Sources differ on the deadline: Reuters-based items and Baird Maritime say Nov 5, others Nov 4. The PMA statement page returned an error and could not be read. Other transport: no US rail, trucking or airline strike or nationwide air disruption was found for Nov 4 (search results were undated or old; the FAA status page was not read). Diesel at $6.26 (AAA) still weighs on trucking.
