OrangeWorld levelUnchanged from yesterday

The Iran war still drives the world story that reaches American households, and the picture is unchanged: no US-Iran deal, and tanker incidents continue. Iran's navy said two more tankers hit mines Nov 6 after five tankers and a tugboat Nov 5; maritime officials have not confirmed these, and none of those reports gives casualties; separately a crew member died aboard the tanker Velos Sapphire in a suspected missile strike (Gulf News, CBS). Qatar's mediation continues and Reuters, via CNBC, reports Iran sent a nuclear proposal; I found no US response. Brent settled Nov 6 at $98.32 and WTI at $90.83, down more than 16% and nearly 13% for the week (CNBC). In Ukraine, Russia hit Kyiv with ballistic missiles overnight Nov 6-7 and closed the Northern Bridge, three days before US-led talks open in Abu Dhabi Nov 10-11 (Kyiv Independent, Al Jazeera). CDC's Ebola count is 10,772 confirmed cases and 5,234 deaths (data as of Nov 4), with no US cases.

Drops to Yellow if Iran and the US accept a Qatari-mediated proposal and tankers move through Hormuz in volumeGoes Red if US forces resume strikes on Iran, tanker attacks continue, or the Nov 10-11 Abu Dhabi talks collapse

Iran says more tankers hit mines near Hormuz Nov 5-6; no US-Iran deal and US forces' next move unclear

Iran's Revolutionary Guard navy said on Nov 6 that two oil tankers hit mines and caught fire in and near the Strait of Hormuz, after reports Nov 5 of five tankers and a tugboat; the Guard said the ships were on routes it calls unauthorized and had switched off tracking systems (Iran International). CBS notes maritime officials have not confirmed these incidents and the reports of the mine strikes give no casualties; separately CBS and Gulf News report a crew member died aboard the Velos Sapphire after a suspected missile strike. CNBC reports UKMTO data shows attacks on vessels continuing at a near-record rate. Mediation through Qatar continues with no announced breakthrough; CNBC, citing Reuters and a senior Iranian official, says Iran sent a nuclear proposal to Washington through Qatar, and I found no US response. CBS reports two US carrier groups are in the region and a third, the Theodore Roosevelt, will not arrive for at least two more weeks; the president has not said whether he will order new strikes. As of Nov 5, Al Jazeera reported The New York Times saying unnamed Pentagon officials describe thousands of US forces positioned to resume combat; I found no US government confirmation. Why it matters to Americans: tanker attacks and any return to US strikes move oil and gasoline prices and put US forces at risk.

Oil settles Nov 6 near $98 Brent and $91 WTI after falling more than 16% and nearly 13% for the week

CNBC reported Brent settled Friday Nov 6 at $98.32 (up 3 cents) and WTI at $90.83 (up 31 cents). Brent fell more than 16% for the week and WTI nearly 13%. CNBC says traders are weighing whether the end of the US midterms raises the chance of new US action against Iran; it quotes Rapidan Energy's Bob McNally putting the chance fighting resumes at 80% and saying prices could top $100. The previous report's figures were Nov 5 settles of $98.29 and $90.52 (Reuters via Investing.com). Why it matters to Americans: crude feeds pump prices with a lag.

escalatingConflictRussia & Ukraine

Russian ballistic missiles hit Kyiv overnight Nov 6-7; Northern Bridge closed; talks open in Abu Dhabi Nov 10

Kyiv Independent reports Zelensky said Russia fired 36 ballistic missiles at Kyiv and Kyiv region overnight, and Ukraine's Air Force reported 172 Shahed-type drones. Casualty counts differ by source: at least six hurt in Kyiv city including a 14-year-old girl and, per police, one killed and two hurt in Kyiv region (Kyiv Independent); Al Jazeera, citing Kyiv's military administration, reported two injured. The Northern Bridge in Kyiv was damaged and closed in both directions, and substations linking two nuclear plants to the grid were struck (Kyiv Independent). Zelensky had warned the evening of Nov 6 that Russia was preparing strikes on energy, Dnipro bridges and civilian infrastructure. US-led Ukraine-Russia talks are set for Abu Dhabi Nov 10-11; Al Jazeera says the president said a deal may be imminent after meeting Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev, and did not meet the Ukrainian delegation. Why it matters to Americans: US-mediated talks and energy markets.

Houthi missiles aimed at Saudi Arabia; US embassies in Israel and Iraq warn of Houthi and Iran-linked attacks

CBS reports Saudi-led coalition forces said they destroyed two Houthi ballistic missiles aimed at Najran on Nov 6 and that the Houthis claimed a drone attack that disrupted flights at Dammam's King Fahd airport (CBS). Per search listings (embassy pages blocked to me), the Nov 6 US Embassy Jerusalem alert warns of possible Houthi and Iran-linked attacks, flight cancellations and airspace closures, and the US Mission Iraq alert cites Houthi hostilities against Saudi Arabia; Iraq is under a Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory. US Mission Saudi Arabia's alert (dated Nov 2) says non-emergency US staff were ordered out Oct 23. Why it matters to Americans: Americans in the Gulf face airport disruptions.

North Korea: several missiles fired Nov 4; no new launch found Nov 5-6

South Korea's Joint Chiefs said several missiles were fired Nov 4 from the Sondok area toward the east coast sea (NK News). Al Jazeera calls it the fourth launch in a month and says it came hours after Pyongyang said it saw no need to resume diplomacy with Washington, after the FBI blamed North Korea for a crypto theft at Binance, which North Korea denies. As of Nov 5, state media said North Korea tested a new air-defense missile system and held a long-range cruise-missile drill (AFP via Manila Times). I found no launch dated Nov 6. No travel or shipping disruption for Americans has been reported.

CDC says Uganda's and France's last cases recovered in July, and reports no US cases. ECDC separately lists 10,741 confirmed cases and 5,230 deaths in DRC as of Nov 5, and eight affected provinces (Ituri, Nord-Kivu, Sud-Kivu, Tshopo, Haut-Uele, Bas-Uele, Sud Ubangi, Nord Ubangi). WHO (Nov 4) describes the vaccines and treatments under study as candidates; initial treatment-trial findings are expected in the coming months. People who were in DRC within 21 days cannot board commercial flights to the US, and since 11:59 pm ET Nov 3 all international passengers to the US sign an attestation that they were not in DRC in that period.

Supermarket freezer hacks: no new attack or attribution found; Pentagon probe continues

Open-thread check Nov 7: I found no report dated Nov 6-7 of a new attack, an on-record attribution of the US commissary cases, or a civilian US store hit. Search coverage runs to Nov 4, when the UK National Cyber Security Centre's Richard Horne said this was just 'the beginning' as AI finds flaws in old technology (per a search summary, not a page I read). As of Nov 3, CNBC reported the Nov 2 attacks hit supermarkets in Belgium, Sweden, Luxembourg, Finland, Ireland and Estonia after hundreds of French stores in October; no group has claimed them and the EU Commission convened a task force with ENISA and Europol. Six US military commissaries had freezer failures in late August; the Pentagon treats them as a suspected hack and is coordinating with French authorities, but CNBC does not say the incidents are connected. On Nov 5 CISA, the FBI and three departments issued a joint warning on cold-chain temperature controls.
