OrangeThreat levelUnchanged from yesterday

The Iran war still sets the level: Trump said Nov 5-6 the US may have to 'destroy' the rest of Iran, Iran says tankers burned in Hormuz, and Qatar-mediated talks have stalled. US stocks fell sharply Thursday (Dow down 3.4%, Nasdaq into correction) and Brent oil bounced back to about $98, while AAA's national averages remain $4.07 for gasoline and $6.23 for diesel. A new federal warning says grocery and cold-storage temperature controls are being targeted, and a watchmen strike deadline at LA/Long Beach ports falls at midnight Pacific tonight. No major US grid or communications outage is underway; flooding in Georgia, Tennessee and Florida is regional.

Drops to Yellow if Iran and the US accept the Qatari interim proposal, tankers move through Hormuz in volume and stocks steadyGoes Red if US forces resume strikes, the port strike begins, or markets keep falling and fuel prices rise again

Iran says tankers burned in Hormuz; Trump says the US may have to 'destroy' the rest of Iran; talks stall

Al Jazeera's Nov 6 live blog reported President Trump said the US may have to 'destroy' the rest of Iran and that people would 'know soon enough'; he also spoke with Qatar's emir, who stressed continued dialogue. Iran said states aiding a US attack are 'legitimate targets', and its Revolutionary Guard said tankers caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz; that is an Iranian claim we could not independently confirm. Iran's security chief called the US reply to its seven conditions 'not convincing' (Al Jazeera, Nov 4). We found no report of new US strikes after the Nov 3-4 strike on an Iranian air-defense site on Qeshm Island, which US officials called defensive.

CISA, FBI and three departments warn that grocery and cold-storage temperature controls are being targeted

Nextgov/FCW and Defense One reported that on Nov 5 CISA, the FBI and the Departments of Health and Human Services, Agriculture and Transportation warned that attackers are targeting electronic temperature controls at grocery stores and cold-storage sites, and could force freezers into heating or defrost cycles and hide the real temperature. The US cases described are about six military base commissaries since late August; the reports describe no civilian US store case. The notice names no responsible party. Anonymous officials told Defense One they suspect Iran-linked hackers for the commissary failures; that is not an on-the-record finding.

LA/Long Beach watchmen strike deadline is midnight Pacific tonight

The Pacific Maritime Association (the employer group) said the parties extended the contract again after no deal Wednesday; talks continue Friday with the federal mediation service, FreightWaves reported. The union is ILWU Local 26, about 250 watchmen (gate and terminal security), roughly 2% of the ILWU port workforce. The PMA has warned that other ILWU members are expected to honor picket lines, which could disrupt ships, container yards and truck gates. No deal had been reported as of Nov 5 coverage.

Record flooding on the Georgia-Tennessee line; Florida emergency now covers 14 counties

FOX Weather reported the Toccoa River reached a record crest above 18 feet on Nov 5, the worst flooding there since 1990, with at least 80 rescued in Fannin County, Ga., and at least 68 in Polk County, Tenn. Gov. Kemp declared a state of emergency for four Georgia counties. No deaths are reported in the linked coverage; WSB-TV reported one man swept away in his car, and none of the links says what happened to him. In east-central Florida, ABC News reported Nov 3 that 2 people died and hundreds were rescued; the state of emergency now covers 14 counties, and schools in several counties stayed closed Friday (WFLX).

Greenacres, Fla., Learjet 60 crash: NTSB recovers part of an engine and asks the public to report debris

The NTSB said excavation of the crater continued Nov 5, part of one engine was recovered, and debris was found away from the main site, including on roofs of nearby buildings; the public is asked not to move debris and to email [email protected]. Nine people died in the Nov 1 crash. The NTSB has not determined a cause; a preliminary report is expected within about 30 days. Its earlier finding that the left elevator was recovered 1.3 to 3.8 miles away is unchanged.

Comms chatter What people are saying vs. what we found

Video of the Florida Learjet crash was '100%' made with AI, so the crash was staged or faked.
Circulating on X posts from Nov 1, citing an AI-detection tool; PolitiFact says one questioning account was amplified by bots tied to a Russian influence campaign (Storm-1516).
What we foundPolitiFact rated it Pants on Fire. It traced the clip to a West Palm Beach creator's original Facebook post; AP, CNN, CBS and BBC shared the footage and confirmed it shows the Nov 1 Palm Beach County crash. The X posts relied on Hive Moderation, which did not flag the original footage when PolitiFact tested it; PolitiFact notes the tool is imperfect. A Clemson media-forensics researcher told PolitiFact the footage is authentic and called the pattern the 'liar's dividend' (real content doubted because AI exists). Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said everyone aboard died; the NTSB said Nov 2 the cause is still under investigation. This is a different angle from the missile and AI-hack theories already run Nov 2-3.
Hackers are attacking grocery-store freezers and coolers, US supermarkets are next, and Iran is behind it.
Circulating on Social posts and Substack pieces since Nov 2-3; new today: a joint federal warning on Nov 5.
What we foundUPDATE to the Nov 3 card (open thread 'Refrigeration hacks'); new fact is the Nov 5 warning. Nextgov and Defense One report that CISA, the FBI and the Departments of Health and Human Services, Agriculture and Transportation warned Nov 5 that attackers are targeting electronic temperature controls at grocery stores and cold storage, and could force heating or defrost cycles or hide temperatures. The articles describe the US cases as the military commissaries; the US incidents they describe are about six military commissaries since late August. The federal notice names no responsible party. Nextgov reported that officials, unnamed, suspect Iran-linked hackers for the commissary failures; an Alt Security executive called the pattern close to Iranian tactics, which is his assessment, not an official finding. Nextgov also reports European incidents including supermarkets in Sweden, Belgium and Luxembourg.

Chatter volume: moderate - Post-election claims are the most-checked fact-check topics; the Learjet footage-is-AI claim and a federal freezer-hack warning are the only non-election items found. No new bank-holiday, martial-law or internet-shutdown fact checks found.

Power grid & FORTRESS America

watch

No US grid attack, large outage or new DOE emergency order found for Nov 5-6.

No US grid attack, large outage or new DOE emergency order found for Nov 5-6. DOE's 2026 Federal Power Act 202(c) emergency-order list (read Nov 6) still shows Order 202-26-50, issued Oct 12 to PJM for Oct 13-16, as the newest. Orders keeping older plants available remain in force: Craig Unit 1 in Colorado (Sep 27 to Dec 25), Culley 2 and Schahfer 17-18 in Indiana (to Dec 18), Centralia Unit 2 in Washington (to Dec 11) and Stanton Unit 1 in Florida (Order 202-26-42, to Nov 30). Whether Stanton is renewed after Nov 30 is not known. FORTRESS America (the Pentagon effort to let major bases run without the civilian grid): no November development found in search; coverage dates from Sep 30 to late October, and a memo dated Oct 6 set up a program office with an interim director (DefenseScoop). The reported 90-day self-sufficiency standard is a planned requirement, per press reports. EO 14421 (Aug 2026): no new DOE rule found; the Dec 24 date was not confirmed. Could not check: NERC and FERC pages, ERCOT/PJM/MISO alerts; a 2026-27 NERC winter assessment did not appear in search (the 2025 one came out Nov 18, 2025).

Iran: Al Jazeera's Nov 6 live blog reported President Trump said the US may have to 'destroy' the rest of Iran, adding that people would 'know soon enough'; he also held a call with Qatar's emir, who stressed continued dialogue (Al Jazeera). Al Jazeera's Nov 5 live blog reported Iran said states aiding a US attack are 'legitimate targets'. The Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) said two oil tankers caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz after trying an 'unauthorized' route; that is an IRGC claim, not independently confirmed in what we found. On Nov 4, Al Jazeera reported Trump confirmed US strikes on an Iranian anti-aircraft site on Qeshm Island, which US officials called defensive after Iranian fire at a US aircraft; Iran's Mohsen Rezaei called the US reply to Iran's seven conditions for reopening the strait 'not convincing'; Qatar said proposals are being exchanged in real time. US media citing officials said Central Command had strike plans that could begin as early as Wednesday (Al Jazeera, Nov 4); we found no report of new US strikes after the Nov 3-4 one. Ukraine: Kyiv Post reported Zelenskyy held a 90-minute call on Nov 4 with US envoys Witkoff and Kushner ahead of US-Russia-Ukraine talks in Abu Dhabi on Nov 10-11; Al Jazeera (Nov 3) reported the Kremlin confirmed Russia will take part. We did not find a verified report of an overnight Russian attack on Nov 5-6. Gaza: as of Nov 2, ABC (Reuters) reported Israeli strikes killed eight in Gaza, medics said; Israel says Hamas is rearming, Hamas denies it; nothing newer verified. North Korea: The Japan Times (Nov 4, search snippet) reported South Korea's military said North Korea fired several missiles toward the East Sea; it was not clear what type. Taiwan: as of Nov 2, Taiwan's coast guard accused China of harassing shipping east of Taiwan (ABC News/AP); no newer wire report found. Lebanon: as of Nov 2, Israeli strikes continued in the south and a Lebanese official said direct talks had made no progress (Arab News).

Oil bounced back Thursday (Nov 5) after Wednesday's sharp drop. Reuters, via Investing.com, reported Brent settled at $98.29 (up $3.67) and WTI at $90.52 (up $2.40), as new tanker attacks revived supply worries; both fell more than 8% Wednesday to their lowest settlements since Aug 31. UKMTO (the UK maritime security agency) reported at least five vessels affected since Sunday. Iran's Revolutionary Guard said two tankers and a tugboat caught fire after using unauthorized routes through the Strait of Hormuz; the Investing.com report did not say who carried out the attacks. A separate tanker was reported hit north of Qatar (Maritime Executive reported one crew member killed; Splash247 reported one seafarer missing). AAA's national averages for Nov 6: regular $4.07 (yesterday $4.10, week ago $4.20, year ago $3.08); diesel $6.23. AAA's record diesel average, $6.53, was set Sep 22 of this year. Pump prices lag crude, so a Thursday-Friday crude bounce could slow or reverse the fall, but nothing guarantees either. EIA's weekly report for the week ending Oct 30 (released Nov 4), as carried by BOE Report and others: commercial crude stocks fell 865,000 barrels to 409.8 million, gasoline fell about 222,000 to 209 million, distillates (diesel and heating oil) fell 3.6 million to 99.3 million, about 13% below the five-year average, and refineries ran at 94.5% of capacity. The next EIA report is Nov 12 (delayed a day by the Nov 11 federal holiday). OPEC+ (the oil-producer group) held December output unchanged at its Nov 1 meeting, per OPEC's release; the next meeting is Nov 29 (carried from Nov 5).

New Nov 5: CISA and the FBI, with the Departments of Health and Human Services, Agriculture and Transportation, issued a joint warning that attackers are targeting the electronic temperature controls of grocery stores and cold-storage facilities (Nextgov/FCW, Defense One; CISA lists the fact sheet 'US Government Partners Urge Hardening Industrial Refrigeration and Cold Chain Monitoring Systems' dated Nov 5). The agencies said attackers could force freezers into continuous heating or defrost and hide the real temperature from operators, with risks of spoiled stock, equipment damage, fire and unsafe products reaching consumers. Advice: take controls off the public internet, secure needed remote access, separate them from business networks, change default passwords, install updates, replace unsupported equipment. The US notice names no responsible party and names no vendor in the reporting read. Refrigeration open thread re-checked: US cases are still the roughly six military commissaries from late August (Nextgov/FCW); no attack on a US civilian store was reported in the sources read. Iran attribution is still unconfirmed on the record: two people familiar told Defense One officials suspect Iran-linked hackers; the 'up to 14 bases' figure appears only in an aggregator headline. Europe: attacks reached French blood-bank freezers (overnight Nov 2-3) and supermarkets in Sweden, Belgium and Luxembourg that week, and European authorities issued their own joint warning Nov 4 (Defense One). CISA's advisory page was readable Nov 6: newest items are the Nov 5 refrigeration fact sheet, a Nov 5 post-quantum vendor-questions resource, and one-vulnerability additions to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on Nov 3 and Nov 4; no new numbered advisory since the Oct 20 SafePay ransomware advisory was seen. Water: CISA and FBI's July 30 warning of a 'significant escalation' in attacks on water-utility controllers stands (Cybersecurity Dive); no newer water item found. Hospitals: no new US hospital attack found for Nov 4-5 in the sources read. Could not check: FBI IC3, full KEV entries, state-level hospital reports.

Outlook: the Weather Prediction Center (WPC, 3 AM EST Nov 6) puts a Slight Risk (level 2 of 4) of excessive rainfall on the Mid-Atlantic coast to southeastern New England today, with heavy rain there into Saturday morning; heavy rain threat grows across South Texas over the weekend; a strong Pacific storm brings wind and rain to the Pacific Northwest Sunday morning; wet snow is possible on interior New England high ground Sunday. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) rates severe-storm risk 1 Marginal to 5 High; today it has a Marginal (1 of 5) risk for the Carolinas to the Mid-Atlantic coast, with damaging gusts and a brief tornado possible. Tropics: National Hurricane Center (NHC), 1 AM EST Nov 6: a gale-force non-tropical low south of Bermuda has a 20% chance of becoming tropical or subtropical in 48 hours and 30% in 7 days (down from 30% and 50% on Nov 5). In the Pacific, an area southeast of the Big Island of Hawaii has a 90% chance of becoming a tropical depression, expected Friday, and is forecast to pass well south of the islands. Space weather (NOAA SWPC, 08:45 UTC Nov 6): geomagnetic (G), radio blackout (R) and radiation storm (S) scales are all 0 now (G runs 1 minor to 5 extreme; R and S likewise).
